DANDRIDGE, TN – It is a rare feat to witness a century of change, but for Jefferson County’s Gladys Horner, it is simply a life well-lived. Born March 24, 1919, in the Talbott-Kansas community, Mrs. Horner is preparing to celebrate her 107th birthday, marking a milestone that spans nearly all modern American history.
Born just as the world emerged from World War I, Gladys has been a firsthand witness to the evolution of the United States. At the time of her birth, Woodrow Wilson held office. She has since seen 18 subsequent presidents take the oath of office. From the horse-and-buggy era to the dawn of the smartphone, her life serves as a living bridge between the past and the present.
A Legacy of Strength and Family
Gladys spent her life building a home in the community she loves alongside her husband, J.D. Horner. Following J.D.’s passing in 1977, Gladys demonstrated remarkable resilience, maintaining her independence well into her late nineties. In 2020, she transitioned to Jefferson Park, a skilled nursing facility in Jefferson County, where she continues to be a beloved fixture, known for her sharp memory and captivating storytelling.
“Gladys hasn’t just read about history; she has lived it,” says Roger Mynatt, Chief Executive Officer of Jefferson Park. “From the Great Depression and World War II to the moon landing and the digital age, she has seen the world transform in ways most of us only see in textbooks.”
Witnessing Innovation at Home
While global events shaped the world, Gladys recalls the technological marvels that changed daily life in Tennessee. She remembers the arrival of electricity and indoor plumbing, the first automobiles, and the magic of the first color television. An avid cook, she particularly cherished the arrival of modern kitchen appliances—tools that allowed her to do what she loved most: feeding her family.
Five Generations of Love
At the heart of Gladys’s long life is her family. Her legacy includes two children (a son and a daughter), 3 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
Through decades of weddings, reunions, and celebrations—as well as the inevitable hardships of a century of life—Gladys has remained a pillar of strength and joy for her family and friends.
As she reaches this incredible milestone, Gladys offers a simple yet profound blueprint for a long life: Stay strong, love your family, enjoy good food, and live life one year at a time.
Gladys will celebrate this milestone in a private party with her family and friends, but if you’d like to share in the celebration of a life well-lived send her a birthday card to:
